Flaming Lips shoot new video here at El Sibil – Controversy ensues

No big deal… Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips and Erycah Badu were here Memorial weekend shooting a music video.

Director Jason Whitbeck Featured in the Dallas Observer’s DC9 Blog

Last week, the Observer’s Alan Ayo interviewed our own Jason Whitbeck for the DC9 At Night Dallas Music Blog‘s ongoing series “Local Music ‘Mericans”. The series aims to ”get to know the people behind the scenes in Dallas/Fort Worth music.” Check out a intro here and follow the link for the interview.

Jason Whitbeck’s come a long way since his earliest days in Deep Ellum, as a street rep slinging free Camel cigarettes. He’s become quite a successful video director, shooting for notable clients like JC Penney (a spot starring Cowboys’ tight end Jason Witten), Which Wich and Neiman Marcus.

Whitbeck also runs Yes Go Productions, and Dallas has better artistic content because of his work. In addition to the high-end clientele, he’s done camera work for events like the El Sibil parties, as well as artists like Smile Smile, Polyphonic Spree, Analog Rebellion and, last December, a great new video for Missile.

Yes Go collaborates with Detroit Friends on SXSW videos for Chevrolet

In a killer turn of events, Yes Go was asked to work with Detroit production visionaries, Order & Other, on a project for Chevrolet at SxSW. We really had to use our producing chops to supply the equipment, offices, logistics, and insider consultation; to make sure everything went off without a hitch. After that we got straight to editing and for most of the spots, we used the music from our good friends in Mystery Skulls and Analog Rebellion… (represent!). We couldn’t ask for a better subject matter either. Chevy flew in Graffiti artists from all over the world then everyone drove from Detroit to Austin. It was a unique experience for the artists from Europe who really hadn’t experience the American road trip.

It has taken us a couple weeks to recover from the Festival. While half the team was devoted to the editing suite, Ryan was able to attend the Film, Interactive & StyleX festivals. We are still feeling inspired by all of our experiences there, from the panels, to the artists, the music and the food.

Analog Rebellion and Yes Go Productions Make Lo-Fi Friends

This teaser for the upcoming documentary How To Be Lo-Fi With Friends appeared yesterday. It tracks the making of Analog Rebellion‘s upcoming album, Full Frontal, and is a collaborative effort between the band and Yes Go Productions, the same folks who put on El Sibil’s semi-regular parties.

Yes Go director/producer Jason Whitbeck says they’re still in the middle of shooting, but Analog Rebellion’s main man Daniel Hunter “is currently running a campaign to raise money for the album and documentary since he isn’t on a label. Anyone that donates $10 or more will have their name in the credits of the documentary and get a free digital copy of the album.”

And speaking of El Sibil, their next party on January 28 is a doozy. Violinist Daniel Hart headlines, and will be joined by Darstar and Spook Easy. Mark it.

El Sibil’s Flashlight Party

Word on the street is EL SIBIL’s monthly parties are a “must-see” event and that the last one was “epic.” With that in mind, tomorrow night you’ll basically be in the dark — hence the need to bring a flashlight — at the Oak Cliff studio space.

You’ll also be able to illuminate three local dance-worthy bands: Analog Rebellion, Mystery Skulls, and Ocelot. $10 for entry, and the show will be recorded, so wear your most flashlight-worthy duds.

Saturday marked another crazy night at EL SIBIL: This time the crowd was armed with flashlights and the performers — Analog Rebellion, Murder Skulls and Ocelot — had to bend the light to their wills. Check out more proof after the jump, and thanks to Jason Whitbeck for the photos.

House of Plates, a new blog dedicated to the harmonious blending of music and food, fêtes its official launch with a charitable bash that mixes much more than tunes and appetizers. Musician Christopher Wray will drop his new album as well as perform; The Gypsy Wagon, Co-Op Supply Shop, and Vintagemobile will put on a “pop up” fashion show; and food trucks like Nammi Vietnamese and 3 Men and a Taco will be parked on site. A portion of the proceeds from the event (yes, there’s a bar) benefit The Stewpot.

Smile Smile-Video Premiere

Back in February, Ryan Hamilton and Jencey Hirunrusme, the duo that makes up local indie pop act Smile Smile, put their history as an engaged and then broken-up couple out for all to see–or, as the title of the album they released that month implies, placing their Truth on Tape, so to speak.

A couple months prior, though, in December, the duo gathered a collection of local music personalities–and, OK, some actors, too–at the stunning Rachofsky House on Preston Road. The reason being? A video shoot for the title track of the band’s new album. The concept of the video, meanwhile, followed much the same path of the album and that song, putting the duo–and their personal grievances–out there as pieces of art to be gawked at.

Today, we premiere that video, a gorgeous take directed by Yes Go Production‘s Jason Whitbeck, who you might know as the guy behind our very own DC9 Live at El Sibil series. Chances are, you’ll recognize a few of the faces in the crowd at the art show the video centers around. Among those faces: The band’s Kirtland Records labelmate Sarah Jaffe, Dem Southernfolkz’s Saturday Aldridge, members of The Roomsounds, The Double Wide’s Chelsea Callahan, and so on. Basically, there are a bunch of familiar faces in this clip–including, yes, yours truly, who was caught on film chatting with a certain Toadie in the background as I stopped in for a look-see. Oh well.

Anyway, give the clip a watch. And catch Smile Smile performing for free at Lochrann’s Pub in Frisco tomorrow night on a shared bill with Fort Worth’s recently re-vamped Calhoun, who have a new album almost ready for you to hear.
